Standards for parking garage LED lighting

A building code for parking garages details the standards for lighting. The European Union has established standards for lux values in various indoor lighting environments and applications. For example, LED lighting for industrial facilities or workshops should meet the NEN 12464-1 standard. According to this standard, LED lighting for these purposes should emit a minimum of 100 lux (storage area) and a maximum of 500 lux (laboratory).

Lighting requirements for light intensity are as follows:

  • NEN 12464-1
  • Lane 75 lux
  • Elevator/staircase 100 lux
  • Exit/payment terminal 300 lux
  • CRI > 80
  • Use of (splash)waterproof fixtures is recommended due to humidity
  • 4000K is the most commonly used light color
  • Escape routes must be well-lit (emergency lighting)

ROLLANDTHOF | ZIERIKZEE (NL)

Light management system for parking garages

For safety reasons, lighting in parking garages should almost always be on. This results in relatively high costs, even with energy-efficient LED lighting. To save costs, you can opt for a light management system for your parking garage. This way, the lighting in your garage is controlled as efficiently as possible.

Consider intercommunicating master-slave functions on your fixtures, motion or day-night sensors, or various dimming options when necessary. Depending on the type of fixture, we can integrate different light management systems for your parking garage.

Lighting calculation for a parking garage

To meet the required standards for your parking garage lighting, a professional lighting plan is essential. This plan tells you what type of fixtures and how many of them are needed for your area. This is a challenging task, especially for a large-scale project such as parking garage lighting. Prolumia can assist with this. We use the Relux simulation program for our lighting calculations.

Within ten business days, you will receive a non-binding proposal, including the Relux lighting calculation linked to a quotation. This proposal will explain the layout of the parking garage lighting and the reasons behind the choices made. Additionally, it will elaborate on the achieved light level, by the legally established NEN standards, which define how many lux should be delivered on a specific surface.
